Sarah, I love the idea that you came up with! It is so creative. Having high cabinets can be a problem for everyone! There are cabinets in my kitchen that requires me to stand on a chair and my grandmother who lives with me always needs someone to get what she wants out of the cabinets because she is not able to stand on a chair and reach it.
The retractable elevator is a good idea! I guess all of the contents could be places on the "floor" of the elevator so when you push the button or lever to get the contents down, everything lifts up and comes down so you can choose which item you want. The only problem with this solution is might be costly, unless you know someone who can build something like this and that would be great! :-)
On the other hand, I think that maybe having a grabber may be a more cost effective solution, but then this may also be a problem for someone who has low muscle tone and may not be able to handle the weight from reaching up and grabbing an item using the grabber. I guess you could always have a combination of the two solutions. Use the elevator for heavier items and the grabber for lighter items.
Thanks for your comments! I completely agree about the cost of the device, and a grabber is a GREAT idea! I did not think of that! Maybe there is a way to combine the two? I guess high cabinets are an unfortunate common occurrence - we should really fix this!
